Add as a preferred source on GoogleChoose pipe bursting when the old sewer line is collapsed, badly misshapen, or too small, because it installs a brand new HDPE pipe and can upsize it. Choose pipe lining when the pipe still holds its shape, has few bends to dig around, and runs under a slab or structure. In the pipe bursting vs pipe lining decision, the condition of the host pipe decides almost everything.
Both methods skip the long trench, and both can end with a sewer line that performs like new. That is why homeowners and property managers get two very different proposals for the same broken pipe and have no easy way to tell which one fits.
This comparison answers what people ask before signing: which lasts longer, which costs more, which shrinks the pipe, and what tips the choice around El Paso.

The short answer: one replaces the pipe, the other rebuilds it from inside
Pipe bursting destroys the old pipe and pulls a new, factory made pipe through its path. Pipe lining, usually cured in place pipe (CIPP), inserts a resin soaked tube into the old pipe and hardens it into a new pipe inside the old one.
That single difference drives the rest. Bursting needs a pipe that a tool can travel through and soil that can absorb the broken fragments. Lining needs a host pipe that is intact enough to hold the liner in shape while it cures.

Pipe bursting vs pipe lining, side by side
| Factor | Pipe bursting | Pipe lining (CIPP) |
|---|---|---|
| What you end up with | New HDPE pipe | Resin pipe inside the old pipe |
| Diameter | Same or upsized | Reduced by liner wall |
| Collapsed sections | Can pass through many | Usually needs a spot dig first |
| Digging | Two pits | Often none beyond access |
| Branch connections | Dug up and reconnected | Reopened from inside |
| Typical national cost | $60 to $200 per foot | $90 to $250 per foot |
A trade article in For Construction Pros sums up the core tradeoff well: bursting installs a factory made pipe to known, verifiable specifications, while a liner is made in place, which makes its properties harder to measure. The same piece notes that bursting requires excavating each service connection, a labor cost lining avoids.
When pipe bursting is the better choice
Bursting wins when the old pipe is past saving. If the camera shows a crushed section, a pipe that has gone oval, or joints that have separated so far the line is barely a channel, a liner has nothing sound to cure against.
You need more capacity
Lining can only make a pipe smaller. The 1999 EPA trenchless sewer rehabilitation fact sheet says plainly that CIPP will reduce the pipe diameter and tends to decrease hydraulic capacity. Bursting can go a size up. For a restaurant, a building that added fixtures, or a home with a 4 inch line that keeps backing up, that is decisive.
The line is a straight run in open ground
A lateral that runs from the house to the street under a front yard is the textbook bursting job. There is room for a pit at each end and little overhead to disturb.
Our explainer on how pipe bursting works walks through the pits and the equipment in detail.

Every U.T. Trenchless job starts with a camera inspection and a photo report, so you see the problem before you decide on a fix. Licensed Master Plumber Ubaldo Torres leads the work.
When pipe lining is the better choice
Lining wins when the pipe is cracked, leaking, or root damaged but still round. It also wins when digging even two pits would mean breaking a slab, a finished floor, or a commercial space that cannot close.

Lining in the United States is governed by standards such as ASTM F1216, which covers pipes from 2 to 108 inches rehabilitated by inverting and curing a resin impregnated tube. Our CIPP pipe repair and pipe relining pages explain our process, and if flow is your worry, read does pipe relining reduce flow.
Lining has its own failure points
The EPA lists the risks directly: flow must be bypassed during curing, defective installations can be difficult to fix, and resin can pool at the bottom of the pipe. A thorough cleaning and a camera check after curing are not optional steps.
What changes the choice in El Paso
Local ground matters as much as the pipe. Caliche, the carbonate cemented layer common in our desert soils, resists the soil displacement that bursting depends on. Where the camera and a test dig show hard caliche wrapped around the line, lining can be the only trenchless option.
Age matters too. Cast iron drains that have scaled and corroded from the inside can often be descaled and lined if the walls are still sound, a topic we cover in can CIPP lining fix old cast iron sewer pipes. Clay laterals with root damaged joints and offset sections tend to lean toward bursting.
Which costs more?
National per foot ranges overlap heavily, so neither method is automatically cheaper. HomeAdvisor lists pipe bursting at $60 to $200 per linear foot and CIPP lining at $90 to $250.

What moves the final number is access: pit locations, concrete, depth, and branch connections for bursting; cleaning, bends and reinstatements for lining. We break down local factors in how much pipe bursting costs in El Paso.
Ask for both on the same footage
If a line could go either way, ask the contractor to explain both options using the same camera video. A clear reason for rejecting one method is a good sign you are getting an honest recommendation.
What to do next
- Get a recorded camera inspection and keep the file.
- Identify the pipe material, length, depth and whether any section has collapsed.
- Decide whether you need more capacity or just a sound pipe.
- Mark what sits above the line: slab, driveway, trees, utilities.
- Review our pipe bursting service, then Request Service or call 915.858.0166 to talk it through with the crew who would do the work.
Questions El Paso property owners ask about bursting and lining
Which lasts longer, pipe bursting or pipe lining?
Both are designed for decades of service. The advantage for bursting is that HDPE is a known, factory made product with fused joints, so its quality does not depend on curing conditions in the field. A liner’s life depends on a clean host pipe, correct resin, and a proper cure. A well installed version of either will outlast the clay or cast iron it replaces.
Can you line a pipe that has already collapsed?
Not through the collapsed section. A liner needs an open path and a host pipe that holds its shape while the resin cures. A short collapse can sometimes be dug up and repaired, then the rest of the line lined. If the collapse is long or repeats along the run, bursting or replacement is usually the better answer.
Is pipe bursting more disruptive than lining?
Usually a little. Bursting needs two pits, one at each end, plus an opening at any branch connection. Lining can often be done entirely from existing cleanouts. Both are far less disruptive than open trench replacement, which disturbs the full length of the line and everything built on top of it.
Does homeowners insurance pay for either method?
Coverage depends on your policy wording and the cause of the failure, not on the repair method. Ask your agent before work begins, and keep the camera report and photos so you can show what failed and why.
Who decides which method is used?
You do, but the recommendation should come from the camera footage, not a sales preference. We show you the video, explain what we see, and lay out which method fits and why. If a contractor only offers one method no matter what the pipe looks like, ask why.
