Add as a preferred source on GooglePipe bursting replaces a damaged sewer line by pulling a cone shaped bursting head through the old pipe. The head fractures the old pipe outward into the surrounding soil while a new seamless HDPE pipe is pulled in right behind it. The only digging is a launch pit at one end and a receiving pit at the other, which is why pipe bursting in El Paso can replace a line without a trench.
If a camera has shown a sewer lateral that is cracked, crushed or falling apart, the old answer was a backhoe and a trench to the street. Pipe bursting installs brand new pipe while leaving most of the yard and driveway alone.
Below: what happens on a pipe bursting job, why the new pipe is HDPE, how big the pits are, how upsizing works, and where around El Paso we would recommend a different repair.

The short answer: new pipe pulled through the path of the old one
Pipe bursting is a replacement, not a repair. The old pipe is broken apart and left in the ground as fragments, and a new pipe takes its route.
The industry definition from the International Pipe Bursting Association, published through NASSCO, calls it a trenchless replacement method in which an existing pipe is broken by brittle fracture or by splitting, using an internal mechanically applied force. Put simply, a tool slightly larger than the old pipe is pulled through it.
How pipe bursting works, step by step

The bursting head itself comes in two broad styles. The EPA fact sheet on pipe bursting describes static heads, which have no moving parts and rely only on pulling force, and dynamic heads, which use pneumatic or hydraulic impact to break tougher pipe. Dynamic heads can cause more ground heave, so static heads are preferred in sensitive soil.
Every job starts with a high resolution camera inspection and a photo report. Our guide on how to read a sewer camera inspection report covers the common defects.
Why the new pipe is HDPE
HDPE stands for high density polyethylene. Lengths of it are joined by heat fusion, which melts the pipe ends together into one continuous pipe with no gaskets or mechanical joints. That matters for a sewer because joints are exactly where roots get in and where old clay and cast iron lines tend to separate.
The pipe also has to survive being dragged through broken pipe and soil. The EPA fact sheet notes ordinary PVC cannot support those pulling loads; the IPBA lists HDPE and fusible PVC as the preferred replacement pipes.
What seamless really means
A fused HDPE line has no joints between the two pits, so roots have far fewer places to enter. It is also factory made to a known specification, so its wall thickness and strength are verifiable.
Launch and receiving pits: how much digging is involved
Trenchless still involves a shovel. The difference is scale: two openings instead of a trench the full length of the line.
The launch pit
The launch pit, also called the insertion pit, is where the new pipe enters the ground. It must be long enough for the HDPE pipe to bend into the old line without kinking, so it is usually the larger pit.
The receiving pit
The receiving pit is where the bursting head comes out and where the pulling machine sits. The IPBA guidelines stress that this end must be braced to resist the horizontal force of the pull.
| Existing pipe | How it breaks | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Clay (vitrified clay) | Fractures cleanly | Common in older sewer laterals |
| Cast iron | Fractures | Brittle with age and corrosion |
| Plain concrete | Fractures | Reinforced concrete is harder |
| Orangeburg (pitch fiber) | Fractures | Often badly deformed by the time it fails |
| PVC, HDPE, ductile iron, steel | Does not fracture | Must be split with cutting blades |
Can pipe bursting upsize a sewer line?
Yes, and it is one of the biggest reasons to choose it. Because the head pushes the old pipe fragments outward, the new pipe can be larger than the one it replaces. The IPBA classifies jobs as size on size, single upsize, double upsize, or triple upsize, with anything beyond triple treated as developmental work that needs careful engineering.
The EPA fact sheet notes that standard bursting accommodates the next larger diameter, and that bigger jumps demand more energy and create more ground movement. For a home, one size up is the realistic target. For a commercial building that has added restrooms or kitchen equipment, upsizing can solve a capacity problem no liner can.

When pipe bursting in El Paso is not the right fix
We would rather tell you this before the pits are dug.

We compare the two trenchless options in detail in pipe bursting vs. pipe lining.
Private lines are your responsibility
El Paso Water states that the customer is responsible for the sewer service line from the tap at the main into the property. Texas811 marks public utilities, but private lines on your lot are a separate question, covered in our post on Texas 811 and private sewer lines.
What to do next
- Get a camera inspection so you know the pipe material, length, depth and the exact defect. Our video camera inspection service documents it in a photo report.
- Ask whether the line has sags, offset joints or nearby utilities that would change the method.
- Ask where the launch and receiving pits would go and what sits on top of those spots.
- Decide whether upsizing is worth it for your current and future plumbing load.

Questions El Paso homeowners ask about pipe bursting
How long does pipe bursting take?
A typical residential sewer lateral can often be burst and replaced in a single day once the pits are open, according to trenchless tool maker TRIC Tools. Texas law also requires at least two business days of notice to Texas811 before digging, so plan for a few days from first call to finished line.
What happens to the old pipe?
It stays in the ground. The bursting head breaks it into fragments and pushes those pieces outward into the surrounding soil, where they remain around the new pipe. The new HDPE pipe sits in the space the old pipe occupied, slightly enlarged by the head.
Can pipe bursting go under a house or slab?
Sometimes. If the line runs in a straight path and there is room for a pit on each side, bursting can pass beneath a slab, porch or driveway without breaking the concrete above. For drains with bends and branches under the floor, lining is often more practical.
Will pipe bursting damage my yard or driveway?
Damage is limited to the two pit locations. The rest of the yard, driveway and landscaping above the line stays in place. Very shallow pipe or loose soil can cause some surface movement, which is why depth and soil are checked first.
Does pipe bursting work on cast iron and clay pipe?
Yes. Clay, cast iron, plain concrete and Orangeburg are all listed by the IPBA as materials that fracture during bursting. Ductile iron, steel and plastic need a head with cutting blades that split the pipe instead. The camera confirms which material you have.
