Add as a preferred source on GoogleDescaling makes more sense when the cast iron wall is still structurally sound and the problem is buildup. Replacing cast iron, or lining it, makes more sense when the camera shows cracks, holes, a rotted bottom, collapse or offset joints. For many older El Paso drains the best answer is both: descale first, then decide based on what the clean pipe reveals.
This is one of the most expensive plumbing decisions a homeowner or property manager makes, and it is often made in a hurry after a backup. One plumber recommends cleaning; another says the whole line has to go. Both can be right, depending on the pipe.
This guide gives you the decision rules we use, the camera findings that point each way, national cost ranges from named sources, and the middle option that often saves the most: descaling followed by a structural liner. It is written for owners of older homes and commercial buildings across El Paso and southern New Mexico.

The short answer: the condition of the iron decides
Scale is a cleaning problem. Missing pipe is a construction problem. If the camera shows heavy tuberculation on a wall that is still whole, descaling restores flow at a fraction of replacement cost. If the wall is cracked, perforated or gone along the bottom, cleaning it only makes the damage easier to see.
The trouble is that you often cannot tell which you have until the scale comes off. That is why the sequence matters: inspect, descale, inspect again, then choose.

What the camera finding tells you to do
Every recommendation should trace back to something you can see in the footage. Here is how common findings map to a decision.
| Finding after descaling | Descale and maintain | Line the pipe | Replace the pipe |
|---|---|---|---|
| Smooth, intact wall | Yes | Not needed | No |
| Pitting, small hairline cracks | Short term | Often the best value | Rarely |
| Channeling or holes along the bottom | No | Sometimes, if the pipe holds its shape | Often |
| Offset or separated joints | No | Depends on the offset | Often |
| Collapse, crushed section, deep sag | No | No | Yes |
Why clean pipe matters
A crusted line can hide a hole the size of your palm. Replacement quotes based on footage of an uncleaned pipe may overstate the damage, and cleaning quotes may understate it. Ask whether the recommendation was made before or after descaling.
Descaling vs replacing cast iron pipes in El Paso: what it costs
Replacement is the expensive end. This Old House puts typical sewer line replacement between $1,390 and $5,320, with an average of $3,320, and notes that labor and excavation make up the largest share of the bill. Angi lists trenchless replacement at $60 to $250 per linear foot and excavation alone at $50 to $200 per foot.

Under slab drains change the math. Angi lists concrete slab repair at $300 to $350 per linear foot on top of the pipe work, which is a big reason trenchless options matter for El Paso homes built on slabs. Our post on CIPP lining versus pipe replacement works through that tradeoff in detail.
| Item | Typical range | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Camera inspection | $100 to $500 | This Old House |
| Sewer line replacement, total | $1,390 to $5,320 | This Old House |
| Trenchless replacement | $60 to $250 per foot | Angi |
| Excavation | $50 to $200 per foot | Angi |
| Concrete slab repair | $300 to $350 per foot | Angi |
These are national ranges. Actual El Paso pricing depends on pipe length, depth, access points, whether the line runs under a slab or driveway, and above all what the camera finds. We quote descaling and repair only after inspecting the line.

The three real options, compared
Descale and maintain
This is the lowest cost path and the right one for sound pipe. It buys time, sometimes many years, but it does not stop the iron from corroding. Expect periodic camera checks; our guide on how often cast iron should be descaled covers the follow up schedule.
Descale and line
A cured in place liner is a resin saturated tube installed inside the old pipe and hardened in place, forming a new pipe within the host. ASTM F1216 covers this method for pipes from 2 to 108 inches in diameter. Descaling is the required first step, because the liner needs a clean, round surface. See our CIPP pipe repair service for how we handle it.
Replace
When the pipe has collapsed, lost its shape or sags badly, lining has nothing to follow. Replacement can still be trenchless: pipe bursting pulls new pipe through the old path while fracturing the cast iron outward. Our comparison of pipe bursting versus pipe lining explains which fits which situation.

Does old cast iron always need replacing?
No. The InterNACHI life expectancy chart estimates 50 to 60 years for below ground cast iron waste pipe, but that is an average, not an expiration date. A 60 year old line can have plenty of wall left while a 40 year old line is worn through, depending on soil, flow and sewer gas.
Be wary of age only verdicts
A recommendation to replace based only on the year your house was built, without footage, is not a diagnosis. Ask to see the defect on video and have it explained before you commit.
What to do next
- Ask for a camera inspection with recorded footage and a written summary of findings.
- If the line is crusted, ask whether descaling first would change the recommendation.
- Review the clean pipe footage and match defects to the options above.
- For main sewer laterals, check who is responsible for the sewer line in El Paso before budgeting.
- Verify your contractor through the Texas State Board of Plumbing Examiners.
- Call 915.858.0166 or contact U.T. Trenchless to Request Service and talk through your pipe descaling or repair options.
Questions El Paso homeowners ask about descaling or replacing cast iron
Is descaling cast iron pipes worth it?
It is worth it when the pipe wall is still sound. Descaling restores flow for much less than replacement and shows you the real pipe condition. It is not worth repeating on pipe that is cracked or has holes, because cleaning cannot rebuild missing iron.
Should I replace cast iron with PVC?
If a section truly needs replacement, PVC is a common choice for drain lines. The bigger question is whether you need replacement at all. Lining creates a new pipe inside the old one without removing the cast iron, which avoids tearing up floors, and sound pipe may only need descaling.
Can descaling cause a cast iron pipe to break?
On badly deteriorated pipe, yes. Sometimes scale is holding a weak section together. That is not really damage caused by descaling; it is damage descaling reveals. A careful operator sizes tools to the pipe and checks with the camera during the work to limit the risk.
Does homeowners insurance pay to replace cast iron pipes?
Policies generally exclude wear, corrosion and gradual deterioration, which describes most cast iron problems. Sudden water damage caused by a pipe failure may be treated differently. Read your policy and ask your agent; our post on whether relining is covered by insurance in Texas goes deeper.
How long does a lined cast iron pipe last compared to new pipe?
A properly installed liner is designed as a structural pipe of its own and is often expected to last for decades. New pipe from replacement starts a fresh service life too. The better choice depends on the host pipe condition, access and cost, not on lifespan alone.
