There is no fixed schedule. Most cast iron pipes need a full descaling once to restore flow, then a camera check every one to two years and lighter maintenance cleaning as the footage shows buildup returning. If you need a full descale more often than every couple of years, the pipe is telling you it is time to line or replace it.

This question usually follows a descaling recommendation or a second clog in the same drain: is this a one time fix or a new recurring bill? The honest answer depends on the condition of the iron, which only a camera can measure.

Below we lay out the factors that set the interval, a practical schedule by pipe condition, the difference between descaling and routine maintenance, and the point where more cleaning stops making sense. For background on the process itself, start with our explainer on what pipe descaling is and why cast iron needs it.

The short answer: descale once, then let the camera set the schedule

Descaling is corrective work. It strips years of rust nodules, scale and hardened grease off the pipe wall in one visit. It is not something a healthy line needs every year, the way you might service an air conditioner.

What follows descaling is monitoring. A camera pass shows how fast buildup is returning, and that rate tells you how often to clean. We are not aware of any plumbing code or manufacturer standard that sets a descaling interval; the Cast Iron Soil Pipe Institute’s maintenance guidance, for example, focuses on inspection and risk factors rather than a cleaning calendar. So the schedule has to come from your pipe.

Two different jobs

Full descaling removes hard tuberculation with cutting tools. Maintenance cleaning, usually hydro jetting or a light cable pass, keeps soft buildup from hardening again. Most descaled lines need the second far more often than the first.

What sets the descaling interval for cast iron pipes

Five factors do most of the work, and old El Paso homes often have several at once.

Age and wall thickness

The InterNACHI life expectancy chart puts below ground cast iron waste pipe at 50 to 60 years. Older iron has more pitting, and pitted surfaces rescale faster because rough spots give deposits somewhere to grip.

Water chemistry

El Paso Water calls local water moderately hard to hard in its water quality FAQ. Calcium and magnesium combine with soap and grease on a rusty wall to form crust. A water softener does not reverse existing scale in a drain, but it can slow new mineral buildup.

Flow and sewer gas

Slow flowing, warm wastewater produces more hydrogen sulfide, which bacteria turn into sulfuric acid that attacks the pipe. Trenchlesspedia notes that flow under two feet per second and debris buildup both increase sulfide production. Lines with low slope or a sag corrode and scale faster.

Household or business use

Kitchen grease, wipes and heavy laundry use all feed buildup. Restaurants and multifamily buildings sit at the far end of the scale.

Roots and joint condition

Cast iron joints can let fine roots in, and roots catch debris that then hardens. If roots are part of your problem, our guide on whether tree roots grow back after cutting explains why the interval can shrink.

A practical descaling schedule by pipe condition

The table below is a starting point, not a rule. Your plumber should adjust it after the first recheck.

Suggested follow up for cast iron drains after descaling
Condition on cameraCamera recheckMaintenance cleaningFull descale again
Light scale, solid wallEvery 2 to 3 yearsOnly if footage shows buildupRarely, if ever
Moderate tuberculation, minor pittingEvery 1 to 2 yearsEvery 1 to 2 yearsPossibly in 3 to 5 years
Heavy scale, deep pittingWithin 12 monthsYearlyConsider lining instead
Cracks, holes, missing bottomBefore any cleaningNot a fixRepair or replace

Commercial kitchens are a special case. Grease loads are high enough that maintenance jetting on a regular cycle, often a few times a year, is common, with descaling reserved for when footage shows hard buildup forming.

Every U.T. Trenchless job starts with a camera inspection and a photo report, so you see the problem before you decide on a fix. Licensed Master Plumber Ubaldo Torres leads the work.

Why regular checks cost less than waiting

Scale does not fail gracefully. Flow narrows slowly for years, then a wad of paper catches on a nodule and the line backs up into the lowest drain in the house. Letting buildup harden also makes the eventual descaling harder on the pipe, because tools must work longer against tougher deposits.

Maintenance versus replacement, national figures: Hydro jetting, average$475; Camera inspection, high end$500; Sewer line replacement, average$3,320
Sources: HomeAdvisor (hydro jetting); This Old House (inspection and replacement), read September 2026.

These are national figures. According to HomeAdvisor, hydro jetting typically runs $350 to $600, and This Old House lists camera inspections at $100 to $500. Pricing in El Paso depends on pipe length, access and what the camera finds, which is why we inspect before quoting any pipe descaling work.

Signs your cast iron is due before the next scheduled check

A schedule is a baseline. Call sooner if the house starts giving these signals, many of which overlap with the warnings in our post on signs your main sewer line is clogged.

Call before the next check if you notice: Slow drains on more than one fixture. Suggests narrowing in a shared branch or the main.; Gurgling after a toilet flush. Air is being pulled through traps by restricted flow.; Water rising in a...

When more descaling stops making sense

Descaling is worth repeating only while the iron underneath is holding up. Each camera pass should compare wall condition against the last one. If the bottom of the pipe is wearing thin, holes are appearing, or you need a full descale every year or two, you are paying to clean a pipe that is failing.

The two year test

If a line needs full descaling again within about two years, get a repair opinion. Lining or replacement usually costs less over time than repeated heavy cleaning of a pipe that keeps losing wall thickness.

At that stage, descaling becomes the preparation step for a permanent fix rather than the fix itself. A cured in place liner needs a clean host pipe, so the last descaling is often done right before lining.

What to do next

  1. Find out whether your drains are cast iron. Homes built before the 1970s often are, at least under the slab and in the lateral.
  2. Book a video camera inspection to set a baseline if the line has never been scoped.
  3. After any descaling, keep the before and after footage so the next recheck has something to compare against.
  4. Put the recheck date on your calendar based on the condition your report shows.
  5. Between visits, keep grease and wipes out of drains, and ask about drain hydro jetting for soft buildup.

Questions El Paso homeowners ask about descaling frequency

Should cast iron pipes be descaled every year?

Usually not. Annual full descaling is a sign of a pipe near the end of its life. Most healthy cast iron lines need one full descale, then camera checks and lighter maintenance cleaning. Commercial kitchens and heavily used buildings may need yearly or more frequent maintenance jetting, but that is different from full descaling.

Can descaling too often damage cast iron?

Yes, it can add wear. Cutting tools remove deposits, and on a thin, pitted wall repeated aggressive passes can open weak spots. That is one reason the interval should be based on camera footage rather than a calendar, and why frequent descaling is a signal to consider lining.

Will a water softener mean I descale less often?

It may slow new mineral scale because softened water carries less calcium and magnesium. It will not remove existing tuberculation, and it does nothing about rust or hydrogen sulfide corrosion, which are the bigger drivers in most cast iron drains.

Do enzyme or bacteria drain treatments reduce descaling needs?

They can help break down organic buildup like grease and soap scum between cleanings. They do not dissolve rust nodules or mineral scale. Avoid harsh chemical openers entirely; our post on how often to get drains professionally cleaned covers safer routines.

Should I descale before selling or buying a house?

A camera inspection comes first. Descaling before a sale can show a buyer the true condition of the pipe instead of a crusted wall that hides defects. Buyers of older homes should ask for footage of the drain line, and if heavy scale is present, ask what the wall looks like underneath.
